The Hands of Oral

Hands_3168_sm Prayer Hands

The Prayer Hands greet the viewer at the entrance of Oral Roberts University, cast from Oral Robert’s own chiseled hands, a monolithic sculpture, the largest bronze sculpture in the world. As the setting sun casts its shadow, the eye follows the fingers rising to heaven, pointing upward, where we are beckoned to follow those hands into the holy mythology, a mythology that brings thousands of souls each year to Tulsa to study the scriptures, many of them from checkered pasts, baptized and saved by the holy spirit.

The hands of Oral Roberts, severed at the forearm, give them solace, maintain their belief in the ephemerality of their faith as modeled in pure bronze… an empty symbol.
