The Ancient Animated Scrolls

Animated Scroll.Still002

If you were a digital toddler who had never experienced the ancient Chinese scrolls, and you entered the China Pavilion in Shanghai, you might think that this age-old artistic tradition was an electronic medium created with digital brushes and Wacom tablets.  With its watery flowing projections, the  animated scroll demonstrates the power to bring the imaginary into the physical space. The electronic canvas stretches 100 meters in the cavernous gallery, bringing movement to the village life, shifting from daytime to nighttime in a dreamlike nocturnal space. But unlike the traditional scrolls, people stroll through the busy streets, children play, camels walk, and life as it might been in the Ting Dynasty, some 200 years ago, comes alive.
